My First Year Teaching SAT Math Prep

This past year I taught SAT Math Prep for the first time ever.  I had two sections that met every other day of approximately 10 students.  The only things I was given were a few of the CollegeBoard "The Official SAT Study Guide" books and a course description.  Everything else was up to me.

I spent hours scouring the Internet for resources.  Since the SAT was recently changed (March 2016) finding anything was difficult.  I purchased three workbooks specifically for math throughout the year.  The thing is that even with these workbooks, I have nothing to go on.  There is no actual curriculum for SAT Prep.  That is what I need to work on during the time that I have left this summer.

The most "helpful" thing I found was Shmoop.com.  I used it piece together a rough course outline.  You can get a 24 hour free trial, and I used that to basically copy and paste all of the test questions I could find.  Overall, I think it was a good start, but I don't want to use it at all this year.  The feedback that I heard from my students most often regarding the Shmoop resources is that the questions they provide are nothing like the actual SAT questions, and I simply did not care for their word problems.

I got a lot of use out of the Steve Warner SAT Math Bundle, but it did not align at all with the course outline I created using Shmoop.  Because of this it was difficult to integrate the SAT Math Bundle into my course last year.  From the math bundle, I enjoyed using the pretest.  I will start my class with that this year.  The bundle is strategy-based, and my course outline was topic-based.  Before summer ends I want to go through the books from the bundle, and identify the topic addressed in each strategy so I can use the parts I need as I need them.

These are the three workbooks I purchased:  (* indicates Amazon affiliate links)

As part of my purchase order for this school year, I ordered books for my SAT Prep classes, but I won't receive them until I go back to my classroom.  I have my fingers crossed that when I go in today they will be there so I can get to work on a new SAT Prep scope and sequence.

Does anyone have any hints or tips for teaching an SAT Math Prep course?
