2015-2016 Geometry INB Unit 2 (Transformations) [#MTBoSBlaugust]

I added a new page to summarize transformations.  I introduce all of the vocabulary, and had students identify the four main types of transformations.  This is good review for students, and most of them retained what they learned in 8th grade.  This set of notes only took half of a (42 minute) period.  (We had something going on that day, so it was perfect.  For this year, I made a sorting activity.)

The next day we did Translations.  This was another set of notes that only took half of the period.  (We had something going on this day too.)  I am considering teaching the introduction to transformations and translations the same day.

For our next lesson I took the fact that we got through the notes for the two previous days so quickly, and I decided to combine reflections and rotations into one day.  I loved using the brad and set of axes to determine the rules for rotations (see last year's post), but it just doesn't make sense to spend the time now that Common Core has de-emphasized knowing the rules to perform reflections and rotations.

I really enjoyed my symmetry notes.  I put together this activity, and it was a great visual for students.  This up-coming year, I will be teaching how to find polygon angles before this lesson, so I'm hoping students will realize the shortcut they could take on their own. 

Next we covered sequence of transformations (or composition of transformations).  The emphasis here seems to be on identifying a sequence of transformations (again rather than performing them).  

The last topic we covered in the unit was correspondence.  Here we started developing our definition of congruence, and began practicing identifying corresponding parts of congruent figures.
